Join us for an indepth discussion on Doing Business with the VA for Veteran and Service Disabled Veteran Owned Businesses and other Small Business Contractors following recent allegations made by a VA Senior Procurement Executive that: (1) Over the past 5 years, some VA acquisition and finance officials participated in gross mismanagement and violations of law resulting in billions of dollars being misappropriated; (2) There has been illegal use of Government Purchase Cards in nearly every major organization in VA; (3) There has been illegal use of Federal Supply Schedules; and (4) VA small business goal accomplishments have been and continue to be vastly overstated. 
 
These allegations were recently discussed during a public Joint Hearing of the House Veterans Affairs Subcommittee on Investigations & Oversight and the House Small Business Subcommittee entitled:

‘Manipulation & Fraud in the Reporting of VA Small Business Goals’





held Tuesday, June 23rd in the Cannon House Office Building.

 

 

The Cannon House Office Building, completed in 1908, is the oldest congressional office building as well as a significant example of the Beaux Arts style of architecture. 

Jan Frye, the VA Senior Procurement Executive making these allegations, first testified on May 12th at a hearing held by the House Veterans Affairs Committee on Waste, Fraud and Abuse in VA’s Purchase Card Program and submitted a 35-page Memo to VA Secretary Bob McDonald that was made public a few weeks ago and published by the Washington Post and VetLikeMe.
 
 
 
Accordingly, Jan Frye is now designated as an Official Whistleblower, and from among the highest levels of procurement officers at the VA. Congress wants to know the facts and after years of advocating for increased opportunities for veteran business owners; especially at the VA, we want to know the truth of these allegations and if true, what is going to be done to hold those involved accountable.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization, proudly present the 14th Annual DOE Small Business Forum & Expo, at the Phoenix Convention Center, Phoenix, AZ, June 16-18, 2015.

The 14th Annual DOE Small Business Forum & Expo offers a robust agenda with educational sessions by DOE officials; small business managers and prime contractors to assist small businesses find opportunities within the agency.  Review the scheduled breakout sessions, descriptions and presenters and see which sessions are right for your company.

DOE and its prime contractors present the 2015 Business Matchmaking Session.  Small businesses will receive one-on-one exposure to potential Buyers who have first hand knowledge of procurement opportunities and acquisition assistance within their purview.

Matchmaking participants will receive invaluable opportunity to promote your firm’s products or services directly to procurement officials. These face-to-face Business Sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, June 16 from 1:00 pm – 4:30 p m. Only registered DOE2015 attendees will be able to schedule meetings.

The DOE2015 Exhibit Hall will provide small businesses opportunities to network with over 70 exhibitors including DOE site and facility management contractors, National Laboratories; large and small business, as well as other Federal agencies.  Only a limited number of exhibit spaces are remanding. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS),  the unemployment rate in America has dropped to 5.5%, the lowest that it has been since 2008. The unemployment rate among the Post-9/11 era generation of Veterans is at 6.5%, among the highest in the nation. Many government and private initiatives have started to hire more Veterans. But the answer to eliminating Veteran unemployment may not be solved by finding jobs for Vets, but rather by allowing them to create jobs themselves.

Veterans are 44% more likely than their non-veteran peers to start their own business, according to the BLS. Many have speculated that years spent following orders drives Veterans to want to call their own shots in their second careers. Others have guessed that after years of deployments and frequent PCS moves, Veterans want to create their own businesses in order to lay down roots for themselves and their families in a particular region. While there may be some substance to these hypotheses, the truth of the matter is that Veterans become entrepreneurs because it utilizes their knowledge and skills that were enhanced through their military experience.

Service members, especially those in leadership positions, wear many hats, much like business owners do. And much like successful military leadership, successful business ownership requires the ability to delegate, the discipline to stick to a strategy, and the fortitude to inspire yourself and others to continue in the face of death or failure.The willingness to work hard doesn’t hurt.

But in battle and in business, guts and glory aren’t always enough to accomplish your mission. Successful campaigns and successful business require proper training and knowledge of the tactics that will be used. That is why programs such as the Entrepreneurial Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) are a necessary first step for Veterans wishing to start their own companies.

The EBV program is a partnership between several of the country’s top business schools and the U.S. Small Business Administration. The schools offer free courses in entrepreneurship and business management to selected Veterans and military spouses. The aim of the EBV program is to open the door to economic opportunity for Veterans and their families by developing their competencies in creating and sustaining an entrepreneurial venture.

No one should go into battle unprepared, and they shouldn’t enter into an entrepreneurial venture unprepared either. Make sure that you have the training that you need to start your business and then utilize VAMBOA to continue learning and growing as a Veteran business owner.
